Disability Support Network was established by Kathy Norelli.
Whilst working many years in the disability community, Kathy identified a need for a more personalised, empathetic approach where individuals and their families felt comfortable and at home. Having a son with a disability inspired Kathy to create a nurturing environment where participants and their families have a say and choice over the service they want. Where Support workers, nurses and mentors are treated with respect and dignity where bonds and friendships are made in a friendly and nurturing environment.
Bowling is not only a fun and recreational activity but also an excellent way for participants to work on their hand-eye coordination, balance, and motor skills. The structured environment of the bowling alley allows participants to follow simple routines, which can help improve focus and concentration. Additionally, bowling encourages teamwork and social interaction, as participants cheer each other on and celebrate successes together. This fosters a sense of community and belonging, crucial for emotional well-being and social confidence. For individuals with disabilities, the experience of participating in a group activity like bowling can significantly enhance self-esteem and promote physical health.
Transport Practice Day is designed to help participants develop vital life skills that encourage independence. Learning to navigate public transportation β from reading bus or train schedules to managing transport cards β is an essential aspect of community integration for people with disabilities. This day focuses on building confidence in moving around independently, which directly supports participantsβ ability to engage in community life, whether for work, social outings, or appointments. Practicing these skills in real-world settings helps participants overcome anxieties related to travel, empowering them to lead more self-sufficient lives and enhancing their overall sense of independence.
Wednesdays offer a variety of engaging activities that cater to different interests and abilities. Arts & Craft sessions encourage creativity, improve fine motor skills, and provide a medium for self expression. For participants with disabilities, the tactile and sensory nature of arts and crafts can be particularly beneficial, offering a calming and therapeutic outlet for emotions. Baking Day introduces participants to essential cooking skills, focusing on following instructions, measuring ingredients, and kitchen safety. This not only builds practical life skills but also gives participants a sense of achievement when they enjoy their baked creations. B-BOP Dancing offers a high-energy, inclusive dance experience that combines physical activity with fun. Participants get to enjoy the rhythm of music while improving their coordination, physical fitness, and confidence in their abilities to express themselves through movement.
On Thursdays, participants either engage in outdoor adventures or head to the Turramurra Recreational Centre, where they participate in structured games and fitness activities. Outdoor activities such as nature walks, picnics, or exploration of parks give participants an opportunity to experience the benefits of nature, which has been shown to reduce stress and promote mental well- being. Exposure to natural environments also stimulates sensory experiences, which can be highly beneficial for participants with sensory processing difficulties. At the Recreational Centre, participants enjoy exercises like Zumba and fitness circuits, designed to cater to all abilities. These physical activities promote physical health, improve motor skills, and enhance cardiovascular health while being fun and social. The structured setting also helps participants develop discipline and a sense of accomplishment as they achieve their fitness goals.
Cooking Day is a hands-on learning experience where participants gain important life skills by preparing meals from start to finish. From selecting ingredients and following recipes to practicing kitchen safety, participants build independence and confidence in their ability to manage everyday tasks. Cooking also involves teamwork, as participants often work together to complete different parts of a meal, encouraging collaboration and social bonding. For individuals with disabilities, cooking can also be a therapeutic activity that stimulates cognitive skills such as problem-solving, sequencing, and attention to detail. Sharing the meal theyβve prepared offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their hard work and enjoy the fruits of their labor in a communal setting, reinforcing positive social interactions and a sense of achievement.
Fun Frenzy Day is an exciting day of exploration where participants visit various entertainment venues around Adelaide, such as the movies, zoo, or local events. This day is designed to provide participants with a chance to experience new environments and social situations in a fun and supportive way. Visiting places like the zoo or cinema helps improve social and communication skills, as participants navigate different public spaces and interact with peers and staff. These outings offer valuable opportunities for sensory stimulation, decision-making, and community participation. Fun Frenzy Day also helps participants build confidence as they explore new places, contributing to their overall sense of well-being and belonging. For many individuals with disabilities, this kind of social engagement can reduce feelings of isolation and foster friendships that enhance their overall quality of life.
